The Magician has one chance to make known his affections for Star -- a whimsical beauty who is caught in a brief moment's waltz for a lifetime of reflection.
Another song that has seen several versions and incarnations, Julean and the Rai's "The Dance" started as a similar song with similar content written about an experience where Julean lived at the "Flop House" (same album) earlier in the year in 1996. The "House on McClain", as it was actually called, housed nearly a dozen teenagers at any given time, and "Star", as she was known then, was a regular. This "Dance" became the subject of a song written in the moment, but earlier versions were thrown out once each year, as Julean extracted both chords and lyrics for other music.
During the "Darlene" recording sessions in 2007, this song was rewritten for the album and two versions were recorded: one demo and one actual recording; the latter included on the album.
This version of the recording -- a set of recordings made during the same studio session for "Muse Tree", "Alexandria, Falling", and "Disconnect' in 2007 -- was released in "premaster" form as a physical item for European audiences during performances in Europe from 2008 to 2010. A more recent and mastered collection is available on the U.S. release, "Darlene" (2011), available here:

Lyrics and Music by Julean Rai
Star is the name
You took in the wake
Of the changes.
Patient, like sand
Reaching, like trust
For my hand.
Caught in a sway
Swaying, I've waited
For this dance.
Hoping anonymously
Glancing quite furtively
At you.
And there...
There has been nothing but air...
And now just the cold of your hair...
In the wake of your stare.
Oh, patient, I've been--
Star, we've got
Star, we've got
Nothing by time.
I have been keen for
This dance...
Here, in the shadows, and light...
Patiently, patiently--
And everyone's here
Watching us
Watching us
Move 'round the space
Gawd only knows
This is right...
...and maybe, now, you understand...
Then you took
Him to your
Room.
In a slow motion
Drinking it in,
Touching the warmth
Of your skin.
And maybe quite soon
Soon, we'll be further
Within you.
Follow, mysteriously
Furtively
Disappearing
Soon.
But I'm weak...
Weak from the ashes, and dust...
Now, just the portrait of us...
And the weight of your touch.
Oh, seriously--
Star, you'll have
Star, you'll have
Mountains of fame.
Time has just slowed
For this dance...
All will remember
Your name.
Seriously, seriously--
Everyone thinks
Gawd only
Gawd only
Knows what they think.
We're all alone
In this swoon...
This just may
Be our one chance...
Then you took
Him to your
Room.
Then you took
Him to your
Room.

Great production, vocals ... wonderful sparseness of lyrics and phrasing while keeping its brevity. The tone is movielike and pure, while the music itself is like gravity. Recommend. Julean and the Rai
