about

Reflecting his roots and his first loss of romantic connection, he describes the endings of several more.

"Like This" -- unlike many of the songs on the "Darlene" LP -- would enjoy no newer incarnations, changes or updates. It is, in effect, unchanged since it met paper in the fall of 1996.

For Julean, a nearly autobiographical songwriter, the song tells the story of not one, but two fused parallel experiences in his life during this period. The subjects, or muses, of both experiences would also be featured in the songs "Darlene" and "The Way That Leaving Goes" (both written about the same person), as well as "Roots", found alongside "The Way" on the "Muse Tree" album.

This version of the recording -- a set of recordings made during the same studio session for "Muse Tree", "Alexandria, Falling", and "Disconnect' in 2007 -- was released in "premaster" form as a physical item for European audiences during performances in Europe from 2008 to 2010. A more recent and mastered collection is available on the U.S. release, "Darlene" (2011), available here: juleanandtherai.bandcamp.com/album/darlene

Lyrics From the LP "Darlene" (European Release: "Here.", 2008)
Lyrics and Music by Julean Rai

Verse I
I don't want to remember this...
Can't you see the shape I'm in...
I don't want to remember you
Like this.

So much anger in my heart,
That I sing...

Verse II
You said we had forever, then...
You said it by the tree that day, you said
'Who needs a watch when we've got
Now', you said.

Well, maybe we've got 'now', you say...
But then again, you leave today.
Aw, anyway.

Chorus
And I held it down
As faithful as you were
To me I was
Missing the parts of you
I really never should have missed.
You're calling me a chicken-shit
And I don't know if I love you
But I know I don't
Like this.

Verse III
Well, you make 'LOVE' from a cigarette carton
(Cardboard and shapes)
And I cannot blame you, girl
(We all do these things)
'Cause everyone's got a "lucky"
(Everyone says)
Everyone gets lucky
(Smoke while you stand)
You stand in the doorway
By the screened-in porch, outside
When the lights are out.

Verse IV
Well, I'm--
Sitting on your Front Porch Swing
(Sitting on your Back Porch Swing)
And I--
I can tell you anything
(I can tell you anything)
If you could--
Lean a little closer,
(Lean a little closer...)
If you would--
Utilize my shoulder, and you're
You say it seems the Moon is full...
Can't say I believe this, but I know I
Don't like...

And I held it down
As faithful as you were
Faithless as it were
Missing the parts of you
I really never should have kissed.
You're calling me a chicken.
Don't know if I love you
But I know I don't
Like this.
